Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit of Lauren Mcintosh's paintings in Palo Alto. Lauren, who is co-owner of 'Tail of the Yak' in Berkeley, uses Gouche for her paintings, which gives them a dreamy chalky feel. Her personal symbology reminds me of her shop; large Santos (enlarged photocopies of old postcards applied directly to the canvas), birds especially owls, jeweled crowns and lovely hand drawn flowers. Some of the paintings look like they have been washed out and then re-drawn, much like one would see on a chalkboard. The largest painting 'Original Crops' was over 7 feet tall and sold for $12,000! (see first image) Lauren uses black to sybolize death, owls for wisdom and iconic female images that evoke her personal language of politics, life and transcendentalism. Lovely...
