Christmas Decorating When There Are 2 Women In The House - Part 1

IMG_4460

At this time of year, my Husband, Daughter and I have an on-going argument about WHEN to start Christmas decorating.  Being Danish, My preference has been to wait until the day before the 24th, (OK, a week before would be tolerable).  My Husband's family is Swedish, but as transplants to Minnesota, the Tree went up in early December.  My 14 year old Daughter wants Christmas to start the day after Thanksgiving! What to do?  Compromise...  Last week I had the idea of agreeing on getting a tree on December 13th, which also happens to be St Lucia Day, a fitting start to our holiday season.  Truth be told, I love having a tree and green garlands in the house - its the rest of 'Christmas decor' that sets my teeth on edge.

With the big date set, discussions have already begun on HOW we will decorate, and with WHAT.  A few of you may remember THIS POST about Halloween Decorating with my daughter, well let me tell you, Christmas is no different!  She, bless her, has a very definite idea of what Christmas should look like. Lately her favorite line is having a 'Catalog Christmas'.  What is a 'Catalog Christmas' to a 14 year old?  When all of the ornaments and decorations are color coordinated, and look like they came out of pretty gift boxes from a favorite shop in the Mall.  At times like these I truly wonder "Is this MY daughter?"  Five huge boxes sit in the rafters of our garage - all labeled Christmas.  Each is filled with Nostalgic Scandinavian Jul Decor, Little Red Tomte's, Hand-woven wheat ornaments, Flying geese, crystal icicles and plenty of hand-made delights.  No Catalog Christmas in sight.

Today, tired of being sick and a little bored, I decided to jump the gun on Christmas decorating.  Ok, the reality is I am also claiming a little bit of 'Christmas Territory' in our tiny house, before the big guns come in on the 13th.  I have fantasized about a WHITE CHRISTMAS for years, with lovely white furniture, simple crystal candleholders, and a breath of French elegance.  I'm afraid my tastes are too 'Worldly' and 'Eclectic' for this fantasy.  Digging out some splendid spangled trees gifted to me earlier this year by Nancy made me smile.  Who could sit under these eye-popping trees placed to either side of my mirrored Arts and Crafts sideboard?  A Lovely Antique Chinese Embroidery from the equally lovely Nicol sets the stage beautifully. Ten sweet little paper-mache dolls from China, two ducks and a big blue 'Star' crafted by the Castles own John McRae, have created a Ulla Inspired Creche Scene like no other...  I love how everything looks together here, the spangled trees framing the hand-sewn treasures. Like an exotic Asian Fairy-tale come to life...  I Wonder what my daughter will think???

49 Candles!

IMG_3492

Every year of my life, on this morning I have been serenaded by song, and this morning was no exception! From near and far, phone calls, emails, letters and hugs have arrived - letting me know how truly Blessed I am!  My Mother told me (again) this morning how happy she was that day 49 years ago, at 2:12 am when I arrived, and I told her how happy I am too, that I am here!  Life is indeed good!

These amazing antique movable Silhouettes are a small part of a stunning gift given to me yesterday by The Queen of Ribboned Crowns who always makes me smile and laugh and helped me celebrate my day - a day early. Doesn't that look like me above, singing with Sadie? And surely tonight the golden candle will be lit when my dear husband opens the door!

New Learning Curves...

Has it really been an entire week since my last post!  Please forgive my absence.  It seems as if so much has happened and yet so little in this time.  My beloved computer finally died for the last time, she had been resurrected twice before, but chose this week to find her grave.  Her hard-drive, filled with ALL my photos, links and important information lies quietly in her shell, waiting to be transfered somewhere safe.  Now I am sitting at husbands desk using his laptop, fumbling with my fingers - as the keyboard acts so differently and seems so sensitive compared to my old gal.  And then TypePad decided on tuesday to launch there 'New and Improved' site.  I have no doubt that it will be wonderful and much easier to use, but getting to that point takes time, energy and a bit of hair-pulling frustration...

Following my success at last weekends show, I have been madly trying to get all my Tutorials ready for sale online as PDF's!  Like the precious little gems in glass domes, seen below, they wait patiently for my word, to be sent out to the world and present themselves.  I have so many ideas in the works right now, sometimes I can barely see myself coming and going...  As my Father often says, "Its that dreaded 'P' word, you need it but you don't always like it - Patience."

So my dearest readers, I ask you to hold on, as I am.  This too shall pass, and we will move forward together.

Enjoying Summer Fun!

IMG_2775

We are home again, after one of our best weeks yet in the Mountains!  In between hiking, swimming, biking, river rafting, ice skating and horseback riding we also managed to relax!  Now we feel like we need a vacation from our vacation - LOL!
Will be at the CASTLE tomorrow and a few days next week.  Hope to solve our 'server' problems by Monday, and get back to the routine of blogging...
Miss you all!

Its All In The Timing... Server Problems vs. Vacation time

I am writing this with an amazing view of verdant and lush Sierra Nevada Mountains, tall green pine trees, and clear blue skies... I had hoped to make multiple posts and answer all of the comments now piling into the hundreds before I left, but instead faced days of server problems, leaving me unable to post, comment, and check on emails! Talk about FRUSTRATING!  Using a local server up here in the wilderness, I am thrilled to be able to post, despite it being completely one way (me to you).  Our 5 year old wiring system at home, is now 'ancient history' and needs to be updated...  How can one keep up with the speed of technology?

I walked alone in the wilderness yesterday afternoon, picking wildflowers to draw, and felt so complete, away from responsibilities, technology and the rush of modern day sounds.  Birds called to me from the trees, insects danced around my body, and a delightful northern breeze kissed my bare arms.  I let my fingers trail across branches, rubbed bare and smooth by mother natures follies.  My heart slowed down, and my senses became fine tuned, much as I imagine a captured animal must feel when returning home again.  Irony in those words that tumble out so easily from my heart...

I take solace in the night skies, so many stars twinkling - they have been here longer then we can even fathom!  How easy it is to knot and then double knot the feelings of frustration that build in our stomaches, over little things like server problems and technology woes...  And yet in the bigger picture, in the endless night skies, these problems seem inconsequential and unnecessary - do they not?

Home, responsibilities, computers and commitments await me - just a few days off...
But until then, I am throwing caution to the winds, and taking advantage of the blissful timing to clear my head and heart.  My wings grow stronger by the hour, and my vision clears...  Today I rest, and gather strength for a brighter tomorrow.

Blessings

Loving the mess, and living fully!

IMG_2571

Sometimes I get so busy I don't know where time goes... Here is a photo of my studio table this morning, at the end of one project, and just before beginning a new one. There is litterly 9 different projects in progress here, not including the finished one! YIKES!!!
And a little peek at an upcoming project in the works below...

IMG_1975

Oh, and I had visitors in the Apple Tree, just outside of my studio today...  Three little elves - perched so prettily in the branches.  How I miss the days when my daughter and her friends would partake in this little folly...

As Time Slips By...

Si6oawz6ra_3652426981_4c21cab8f7

I seem to be out of the loop in regular blog posts, and I apologize for that.  Life sometimes creates mini whirl-winds, and it takes energy just to keep up!  Summer is always different in this household with 1 student, 1 teacher and 1 teacher/principal all trying to get used to being around each other all day for a couple of months. It always seems like just when we finally get a routine down and begin being comfortable with each other, school starts, and schedules change all over again!

A few wonderous things to report...

Michael and I shared our 20 year Wedding Anniversary recently.  It's truly amazing how much you can fit into 20 years, and at times it seems like just yesterday that we walked down the aisle!  May we be as charming as the two above as we look forward to another 20!!!

Delightful transformations happening in my garden this summer, as we transform our labyrinth into an herb garden!  I can barely wait to harvest delicious edibles and create magical alchemy in the kitchen!

I have finally been spending some serious hours creating new goodies in the studio, and transforming them into PDF's!  And a gift for all of you is in the works too!  Soon I promise!!!

Thank you everyone for your comments and emails, and for continuing to visit despite my absence.  I hope to be back in full force very soon!!!

Blessings,
Ulla

Embracing Dusk...

IMG_2145

DUSK

The darker part of twilight...
When the sun goes down...

(and interestingly a word created in the 13th Century whose roots mean 'dust')

Do you ever think about 'if you were a time of day - when would you be?'
I know deep in my soul that I am indeed dusk.  I don't think I have always been dusk, as I remember once being afraid of the dark...  Can a child be 'dusk'?

When I think of dusk, I think of that special time of day when the light dims to a certain mood, when colors seem to blend together, when the air is still and the heat of the day is slowly waning, or the cold getting colder...  I also think of dusk as a feeling - one of calm after a busy day, perhaps a bit tired, and definitely moody.  Those who know me well, know that I am definitely NOT a night-owl, and yet I adore dusk.  This time is not always happy for me, as my depression seems to dig deeper when the sun sets.  I do not fear night, dusk helps me to embrace it.

I remind myself that I was born in October, and love Fall.  To me, dusk can be seen as the Autumn period of the day.  Although I am only one year away from turning 50, I am not ready yet to embrace my inner crone, so my dusk is still a growing woman...

IMG_2150

NOSTALGIA

Longing for something far away or long ago...
Mixed feelings of happiness, sadness and longing...

Akin to Greek 'neishai' to return; and Old English 'genesan' to survive...

I have always adored this word, and live my life in many ways with nostalgia in mind. How wonderful that its roots are 'returning and surviving'!  As I age, there are times when I feel myself drifting back in time, while searching for the meaning of life.  I dream of being a child again, and try to recall those feelings of delight.  But the reflections are always dimmed, as if seen at dusk... memories do that...

When I ask myself today why I create, and why I teach - the answer I hear - the answer I am shown...
Is simple.
Because I need to...

IMG_2176

This past week I had a couple of incidents that made me question the WHAT, WHY and WHERE of my creativity and teaching.  I asked myself  'Where do I fit in?'  and 'Who do I create for?'   And ultimately that led me to feelings of 'Why even create?'
I tend to be someone who takes these kind of questions to heart, and perhaps spends too much time in my head.

As a dear friend of mine recently pointed out, "perhaps the reason bad things happen is so that we can see the path to good more clearly".  We know we must travel down a different path, and leave the old one (bad one) behind.

My path is cast in a 'dusky' light right now.  I am fragile and tired, tender and a little heart sick.  Yet, I am also happy and grateful!

IMG_2174

Daily you my dear readers, humble me - with your love and continued support.
For this I thank you...

My dear husband was the one who reminded me of the quote:  "When God closes a door somewhere he opens a window".

It was pure providence that I should find an antique Dutch 'teaching poster'  with not only a window open to the heavens, but Dusk and Nostalgia shown in all their glory, while out antiquing this weekend.  I have hung it on the first wall you see as you come into our tiny home...  a place to remind me of open windows, soothing feelings of dusk and the inner beauty of nostalgia.

A place to embrace life...

Trying To Stay Upbeat In A Lagging Economy...

IMG_1726

I have so many things to be grateful for, so many wonderful things happening - and yet - it can be difficult to stay upbeat and happy.  I've had to cancel four classes in the last 6 weeks.  Scary for me, as this is my main income...  I was so used to my classes always filling and didn't account for the lag in our economy pulling my socks down so hard! Times are tough for many of us...

What I am grateful for today:

*Loving Family
*Health
*Wonderful Friends
*Home and Hearth
*Abundance of Inspiration
*Sunshine and Birdsong
*My WWC Photo Shoot
*Castle Family and Support
*Beautiful Space to Create In
*My Dog Sadie
*Opportunities In The Future
*Fresh Strawberries and Chai
*Wonderful Books To Read
*Spring Break Next Week (Yea!)
*Garden Beginning To Bloom

And last but not least, somehow I passed 1,500 Posts last week and didn't notice!   WOW!

Time goes on...

Birthing An Alligator - Part 1

Babyalligator

When I think of Alligators I think:
*Big
*Powerful
*Frightening
*Primal (thank you Lea for reminding me of this!)
*And in the case of my 'Alligator Wall' - Fun!

So why work on an Alligator right now?  Well, partly once I assembled my 'Alligator Wall' I felt it needed something down in the lower left hand corner...  But I suddenly realized that there is Much Much more to this project then just creating a filler for my wall!

I have been wanting to get back into TEXTILES for quite a while now.  Textiles is my background, I spent years learning about, playing with and creating with it in the form of wearable art.  I made dolls for many years and loved  'dressing them' the best.  Teaching at the CASTLE pushed my art much more towards PAPER.  I love paper!  But there is something really deep inside of ME that needs to work with fibers and textiles.

So I have started an Alligator...
Not just any alligator, but a BABY Alligator, and I thought you might enjoy hearing about my process as I take this leap back to my roots so to speak.

IMG_1695

I spent some time looking for a nice Alligator silhouette, and decided I liked the one shown on top of this post the best.  After finding the image, I enlarged it 250%, so its more life-size.  In reality my enlarged version measures about 25 inches from nose to tail.  Feeling the need to stay 'sustainable and green' I also decided to only use fabrics and materials that I already have.  I first cut out the basic Alligator shape of a nice raw cotton batting.   Then I lay this on top of a shrunken wool sweater and traced the shape to re-cut.  But this time I cut the shape about a 1/4 of an inch smaller all the way around.  I'm totally in a grove now, not really thinking why - just doing...

My reasoning for using creamy whites here in the beginning has to do with my love of the 'White Alligator' that lives in San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences.  He is a real beauty and a true must see!

IMG_1697

Next I stitched the two layers together with a darker thread, outlining the shape.  I worked fast, and left the loose threads.

IMG_1698
IMG_1699

At this point I truly wasn't quite sure how to proceed.  After letting it sit for a few hours, I decided to go back to one of my favorite techniques when I was in school - Reverse Applique.

"In reverse applique two layers of fabric are used and the top layer is cut away showing the fabric underneath."

IMG_1731
IMG_1732
IMG_1733

As tempted as I might be to let it be finished now, I still feel it needs more.  I found THIS IMAGE while doing some computer browsing yesterday and something about it just struck a chord!  Partly it was the colors used, but also the simplicity of shapes.   I pulled out my box of Fabric Scraps and started digging - looking for colors that spoke to me.

IMG_1737

After finding a few pieces that seem to say Alligator, I began cutting them into tiny squares and circles.  I also went through my button box and dug out a large handful of tiny mother of pearl buttons - harking back to the White Alligator who inspired the initial coloring.

IMG_1740

Now the fun part, how to use these little bits and pieces...  Here is what I have lain out so far.  I don't want the initial Applique cuts to disappear, yet I do want something NEW to happen.

IMG_1742
IMG_1744

I'm feeling inspired by how my embroidery threads happen to be arranged.  Haphazardly but in a definite color range.

IMG_1747

Thats as far as I've come.
I am finding it profound that I chose a 'Baby Alligator' to do this project.  I see this as a Baby Step towards going back to my fiber roots.  I hope you enjoy hearing about my process and following along on this new path...
More Soon!

Behind The Scenes Of A Studio Photo Shoot - My Story...

IMG_1642

It's 'the day after' and I am utterly exhausted and spent...  As a couple of you guessed, Jo Packham of Where Women Create spent yesterday morning in my little studio.  I was the next to the last artist being photographed in her whirlwind week long trip to Northern California.  The best word I can think of to describe this experience is 'Surreal'!  My emotions have run the gamut this week, a true roller-coaster event!  Having never been in a professional photo shoot before I had no idea what to expect.  With this in mind, I've decided to give you a day by day playlist of happenings from start to finish as a way to share my own personal experience and tell the tale. ENJOY!

Wednesday March 4th:  Jo emails me asking if she can come the following Tuesday to photograph my studio. This is the first I have heard that I am even being considered!  I nearly jump through the roof!  Talk about exciting!  I feel like I've been handed the moon!!!   THANK YOU KARIMA for recommending me!

Thursday:  I look over my studio space and make notes on what to 'clean', what to 're-organize' and what to 'store', and begin the process of making the studio 'photo-ready'.  As tempting as it may be to leave the space 'as is', I feel compelled to present it in its best light.  Wouldn't you?  Truth be told, I changed very little, merely primped, pruned and re-positioned.  Here is a couple of  Before and After photos that I took of my painting corner.  As you can see, the elements are all the same, I've just moved things around a bit, changed the wall decor, added a little lace to the windows and cleaned up my piles of papers.

IMG_1507

IMG_1614

IMG_1553

Friday:  Jo decides to add a day to her trip, reschedules my shoot for two days later, Thursday morning at 8:00 am, (I will be the 9th of 10 artists she will see.)  I am elated to  have 2 extra days to fluff and pluck!  I continue taking little steps in cleaning and re-organizing.  It feels overwhelming at times, and I have to force myself to see the big picture and not get bogged down in little details!  I want to be sure the real me is on display...

IMG_1545

Saturday and Sunday:  I decide to weed the front yard, feeling the need to have a nice first impression, and aquire a couple of  big blisters in the process...  Husband paints the hallway leading into the bathroom in the house - a job that we've been wanting to do for 2 months, but just couldn't find the time for, and now seems to be priority.
I spend a few hours here and there puttering in my studio - feeling more and more over-whelmed, physically tired but still happy.  My close friend and neighbor Deborah comes over for a couple of hours to help me 'style' my collections.  She has an uncanny eye and talent for placing things so they look their best!  Its amazing to me how hanging a picture 3 inches higher, or placing a shoe with heel turned out on a shelf can make such a huge difference - but it does!  Its still my stuff - just tweeked a little.

IMG_1523

IMG_1535

Monday morning:  Things are taking shape!  My display shelves look great, my supplies are organized as if I have a row of classes coming up (which I do!) and the spot in the garage dedicated to 'storage' is overflowing! Yikes!  All the windows have been cleaned and the resident spiders have been politely asked to move outside...  I am trying not to second guess myself - not an easy thing to do!

IMG_1522

IMG_1619

Monday afternoon:  One of my dearest friends (you'll find out 'WHO' soon enough!) calls me on the phone,  (Jo just left her studio hours ago) and clues me in on how it went.  "Its all about you, Ulla!" she says.  Her parting words - "Ulla, this is your opportunity to show the WORLD who you are and what you do..."
No pressure - right?  I am starting to feel nervous...
Monday evening:  The newest issue of Where Women Create arrives by mail compliments of  Jo Packham herself!  Its beautiful!  The artists and studios featured are amazing and truly beautiful.  I get feelings of doubt and 'less than' while comparing myself...

Tuesday:  I had a restless night filled with nightmares of earthquakes and horses stampeding through my studio! I plot the final 48 hours on paper, with 'Clean Bookshelves' on top of the list.  An hour into the bookshelves, my husband phones from work and asks how things are going, and I collapse in tears...  I'm tired, overwhelmed, excited, anxious, nevous, and a complete basket case.  It feels as if my Menopause has become a dragon and is frying me to the bone!  Ever calm and supportive, he tells me  "Its time to call in the troops Ulla!"   I make a few phone calls and re-plot my battle-plan.

Here are two Before and After photos of my bookshelves.  I am still amazed at how something as simple as re-positioning a stack of books, and weeding a few out can make such a big difference!

IMG_1505

IMG_1616

Tuesday afternoon:  I take an hour off and go over to our neighborhood Nursery and spend $45.00 on a crate of Annuals to fill 4 small pots. This will be the ONLY money I spend that has anything to do with the shoot.  Actually it was more of a 'feel-good' purchase, as I wanted to add a little color to the deck outside my studio windows.  (Ultimately no photos were taken of the outside - so it was pure selfish pleasure on my part...)

IMG_1606

Wednesday morning:  My Mother arrives at 9:00 to help me sew two small curtains to place under my work table. Another project I have been wanting to do for ages, but just couldn't find the time...  At 9:30 Trish brings her beautiful calm presence to my house and quietly 'makes things presentable' inside.  Having focused the entire week on my studio, the house was filled with piles of various things and debris on all flat surfaces.  At 10:00 Lea arrives.  Despite having just been bitten by a dog the night before! -  she offers to clean the Labyrinth and do a little weeding in back by the studio!  Now the walk to my studio looks as beautiful as it should!  As these loving ANGELS work their magic, I begin crossing out my own to-do list, finishing the small chores and eliminating larger ones that no longer seem necessary.

I devote the afternoon to fine-tuning my space, trying to decide what I should leave out 'for show' and wishing I had taken a run to the CASTLE to pick up some more samples of my work.
Alas, time runs out - I tell myself that 'I have enough' and pray that Jo will feel the same.

IMG_1530

Thursday morning at 8:00 sharp:  Michael Garland, the photographer arrives.  Friendly, and chatty he checks the studio for lighting and begins to set up.

IMG_1595

8:35:  Jo arrives.  Excited about having spent the previous day and night at another Bay Area artists space she is delightful and charming.  She and Michael re-connect about the day before.  A few words are said about how to photograph my space, and the two seemingly have a telepathic ability to know what the other wants...

IMG_1589

The next 3 and a half hours are almost a blur to me now...
Was it fun?  Yes!
Was it nerve-wrecking?  Yes!
Was it what I expected?  No...

As a successful and busy publisher and editor Jo spent much of this time multi-tasking.  Phone calls were placed, big decisions were made about the up-coming issue via computer and conversations with Michael and myself flowed in and out of this little studio.  There were times when I just stood there, feeling disconnected and alone, and times when I felt like I had just been given my best 'Five Minutes Of Fame'!

Somewhere in the midst of this, my 14 year old daughter was fetched from School. When I showed Jo my daughters 'fashion corner' in the studio, (which she proudly styled all by herself!) Jo immediately said "Well - we need to photograph and feature her too!"   Michael seemed charmed by my daughters youthful energy and style, and a new photo session was created on the spot!

IMG_1639
Around 11:30, mutual friend of both Jo's and I,  Anna Corba arrived - lending her quiet grace and lovely perspective to the reminder of the morning.

IMG_1600

A little after noon, the photo shoot was finished.  Jo treated everyone to sandwiches and salads which we ate while talking quietly and soaking up a little sunshine on our back porch.

By 1:00 everyone had left for the next shoot, and I sat stunned and unmoving on the sofa in my studio...  Was it really only a week since the first email from Jo?  In some ways it seemed like a month, and in other ways like only yesterday.

Today - the day after...

A close friend described it wonderfully for me this morning;  "Ulla, its as if you just acted in your own movie, and then suddenly were told: Now you have to do your 'Nude Scene'."  In other words, I spent a week re-hearsing and preparing for this movie, but didn't really face the reality of seeing myself naked and exposed - putting my studio out there for the world to see!  My studio is filled to the rafters with things, projects, and inspiration that say'Ulla', speak Ulla and are Ulla.  I am by nature not good at self-promotion, and at times even a bit reclusive... This photo shoot forced me to open up - and show myself in ways I haven't done before.  I also discovered how wonderful it is to ask for help and receive it gracefully.  A true learning experience, that was amazing, exhausting and unforgettable, and filled with a kaleidoscope of emotions and feelings!

THANK YOU JO  for giving me this marvelous experience and opportunity to grow.
I look forward to seeing how our story continues...!

Its All In The Details...

IMG_1517

This last week has been Crazy-Busy in preparation for a special photo shoot happening in my studio tomorrow! When you have a space like mine, that shares room and board with hundreds of spiders and has so many little nooks and crannies (a few that haven't seen the light of day since they were established 14 years ago) cleaning and organizing can be a REAL chore!  Primping and preening the hundreds of little things that inspire and help me share what I create and love with the world takes energy and a focus of mind like nothing else.  Even bookshelves, the work-horses of my inspiration needed to be fussed over and re-arranged... Today I face the final hours of getting ready, with a handful of blisters and a full heart!  Tomorrow the world is coming to tea!
(More - plus what and when soon!)

Baby steps towards Big Changes...
I've cleaned out and updated my Links page.  Let me know what you think!
I've added a Patron link and a Donation Button.  Not as pretty as I'd like, but getting there...
Thank You for your huge response of my Valentines Wreath Tutorial!!!
PDF tutorials and a Monthly Kit Subscription are in the works!
HAPPY TUESDAY!

Wednesday thoughts...
Still working on details here.  Interesting discussions on Patron vs. Sponsors.  I liked the old-world feel of  'Patron' initially, but now see that today 'Sponsor' seems to be more appropriate, understood and widely used.
