Make Your Own 'Miniature Winter Wonderland' Scene - Tutorial!

IMG_3806

As I alluded to in my LAST POST, making these tiny little miniature 'Winter Wonderland' scenes is truly addicting and wonderfully fun!  They are easy to create and make me want to do a whole table-scape full of little mountains!!!

Heres what you will need:

Foil, Cotton Batting, Scissors, Moss and natural bits, DAS paper clay (for little houses), Fabric Stiffener (I used Aleene's), Stiffen Quik (Aleene's), Spray on Snow, Glitter and Mica and Hot Glue Gun.

Step one is to decide how big you want your scene to be.  We were limited to the inner circumference of our glass domes, (about 3 inches) but you can use any size you'd like.  Take a length of heavy duty foil ( about 2 feet or so) and crumple up a preliminary shape to work with.  Pinch out peeks, and pay attention to height.

  IMG_3784

Step two:  Cut a piece of creamy white cotton batting big enough that it will cover you foil on all sides when it drapes over.  Lay your batting flat on the table and pour some 'Fabric Stiffener' onto the batting and work into the batting with your fingers. You want the batting to be moist and tacky on both sides, but not 'drippy'!  Drape batting over your foil, and begin forming it.  Use your fingers to create peaks, and let the batting drape dramatically to form mountain ridges along the sides. Press the batting flat to the table along the outside edges. Have fun with this part!  When happy with the mountains, set aside to dry.

IMG_3786IMG_3788IMG_3908

Step Three:  While your mountains are drying you can make some tiny houses out of paper clay or even cut pieces of foam core.  I made mine of DAS paper clay, and then painted them different shades of red and pink and glued cotton batting onto the roof tops to give a snow topped roof effect.  When your mountains are fairly dry you can cut the edges of the cotton batting to fit what ever size and shape you are aiming for.

IMG_3805

Step four:  Make trees and bushes from tiny pieces of moss.  I cut triangular shapes from pieces of thick moss to simulate conifer trees.  Trees often grow in clusters, and even up on the hillsides, but rarely on mountain peeks.  Use your imagination...  Hot glue trees, and houses in place as desired.

Step five:  The Snow!  First I sprayed a light dusting of 'Spray Snow'.  Be sure to test this before you spray your piece, as a little goes a long way.  A heavy spray of snow gives a very different but equally lovely effect as a light spraying.  If you wish, you can add a sprinkle of glitter on top of the Spray Snow now.  Or you can wait for the snow to dry.  Once dry, use the 'Stiffen Quik' as a spray glue, and lightly spray again applying glitter or mica where desired.  I found that a small sprinkling of Mica on the peeks gave the impression of 'sunlight on the mountains, and a dusting of finer glitter over the countryside made the lower areas look as if a light snow had just happened.  If you can't find a 'Spray Snow', I suggest using the Stiffen Quik and sprinkling on 'fake snow' or glitter.

IMG_3806IMG_3807

A couple of my students in the Mother Winter Workshop added crystals and other miniatures with great effect!  The skies the limit here, just keep scale in mind when you add things. We also thought about how fun it would be to add mini lights onto our hills.  I hope someone will take this project and really go wild with it!!!  I know I will be making more of these little worlds soon and hope you will too. ENJOY!!!

Mother Winter Class at the Castle!

IMG_3887

Last weekend 5 lovely women joined me in creating their own personal versions of MOTHER WINTER at the CASTLE!  Not only was this my last class of the season for the Castle, but I think it was one of my absolute favorite classes!  Using glass domes as a 'skirt' and wonderful papers, fabrics. glitters and natural materials - true fantasy versions of Ms. Winter appeared!  Inspiration came from Pagan Myths, Marie Antoinette and even the Aura Borealis!  My personal favorite part of this project was creating the miniature 'Winter Wonderland' scenes that fits under the glass domes.  Teeny Tiny little trees and houses clinging to snow encrusted hillsides - one is truly transported!

Enjoy!!!

PDF Tutorials On ETSY!

IMG_3475

I did it!  The six tutorials that I presented at last weeks Tinsel and Treasures Show have now been made into PDF's and are ready to purchase in My ETSY Shop!  For ease and convenience I have added the Etsy Mini-shop to my sidebar.  Just press on one of the tutorial images and it will take you right there!

These first six are all 'small' projects, as opposed to my larger  'classroom' projects.  Each takes about an hour to complete.  The PDF's have been formatted to fit American standard letter size paper, as well as Universal A4 size paper.  Each tutorial comes with detailed instructions with lots of photos, and beautiful patterns and images.

I can't wait to hear what you all think of them!!!

Fairy Chatelaine - Class Sample!

6a00d8341c683453ef0120a56fb8a1970c-500wi

Popular during the 1700s and 1800s, chatelaines are decorative clasps from which dangle chains holding various special items -often keys or sewing and writing tools. The Fairy who misplaced this chatelaine lost many treasures: the tip of the Ice Queen's wand; buttons for a princess's gown; the key to the castle; a magic golden fish to wish upon; the Sorcerer's miracle elixir, and the Little Mermaids looking glass. I will show you how to craft all of these wonders and more, from Apoxy Sculpt, a incredibly versatile medium for sculpting and transforming found objects. A vintage German doll's head is the keeper or clasp, holding all the treasures together with silken cords.

Fee: $95.00 includes materials but bring any special charms or vintage jewelry you would like to incorporate.

Dia de Los Muertos Shadowbox - Class Sample!

In the spirit of the season, construct a small, casket-shaped shadowbox with a candle holder mounted on top and a skeleton dangling inside. I will show you how to build the shadowbox with a lid that opens and closes, and how to ruche hand-dyed velvet to create a rich looking interior. I will also give you ideas for decorating the skeleton in ways that might suggest a story about his or her previous life. My skeleton is posed in quite a touching way with a small heart clutched in his hand - he died, you see, of a broken heart...

Fee: $95.00 includes all materials plus skeleton

French Wedding Chair Class Sample for the Castle!

IMG_2679

The Castle In the Air class schedules for the Fall are finally here, and I truly believe this is the best selection of classes we have offered yet!!!  My first class this new session is a delightful Globe de Mariee known as a French Wedding Chair.  These highly collectable antique treasures were created to hold the brides wedding bouquet after the ceremony and kept as a treasured keepsake.  Filled with symbols such as 'rectangular mirrors' marking years of engagement, 'oak leaves' for longevity of union, 'roses' for love, grape clusters for prosperity, and 'diamond shaped mirrors' for how many children the couple desired - these charming chairs tell wonderful stories on their own.  My miniature version is approximately 10 inches tall and created of wire, Dresden trim, and hand dyed velvet.  Castle Class Description follows:

Ulla has designed a magical wedding chair resembling those contained in Globes de Mariee, or Wedding Globes. Popular with the French bourgeoisie in the 1800s, Globes de Mariee are now highly collectible. The elaborately decorated chair contained within was fashioned to display the bride’s coronet and flowers after the wedding. Ulla’s version has a tufted velvet seat and a fanciful back featuring traditional motifs crafted from Dresden paper trim. The Dresden looks just like the ormolu of the originals. This is a truly delightful and joyous piece! Fee includes materials.

$95.00
Instructor: Ulla Milbrath. Limit: 10 students.

Thursday, September 10, 10am-5pm

Please call 510-204-9801 or go online HERE to sign up!  Hope to see you there!!!

Grand Tour Altered Book Class Today at the Castle!

IMG_2602

I will be teaching my Grand Tour Altered Book class today at the CASTLE!  Students can approach this class in three different ways.  One, creating an imaginary trip, like I have here, two creating a book of an actual trip they have taken, or three creating a book for a future trip.
Here young Matilde and her dear friend Fanny take a trip to Europe via Balloon.  Many adventures happen along the way as they experience a Grand Tour like no other!

Reliquary Class At The Castle This Weekend!

IMG_1906

I am truly thrilled to have another full class at the CASTLE  this weekend - my ever popular 'Reliquary Class'! Yesterday I made a few new samples for the class, inspired by Antique Reliquaries.  As always its the little bits and pieces that make them special...
Sizes vary from two inches to two and a half inches.

IMG_1899

This round reliquary has a wonderful vintage 'flaming heart' as the centerpiece.  The spines are actually porcupine quills that I've had for some time, and not known what to use them for...  The Music paper is old French and the quote from a vintage love poem.

IMG_1900

I've had a tiny bag of 'Mouse Skeleton' bones laying around for years, and finally decided to use the ribs in this piece.  Beautiful Dresden bits surround the bones, and found words give them provenance.  The background is old wrinkled red silk.

IMG_1903

This one started with the black sequin net on red background.  The cross is cut from a antique piece of ecclestastical silver ribbon and overlayed with a brass finding, with a old watch wheel at the bottom.  I adore the little silvered glass fish - tiny antique beads from my stash.  The quote is from an old found poem.

IMG_1904

You can't see the background on this one, but its real butterfly wings!  Gold Bouillon, Dresden, quilling and a vintage cameo make this reliquary special.  Butterflies are the symbol of the soul, and here also dreams...

Mermaid Paper Carousel Sample!

IMG_1838

This Saturday's MERMAID PAPER CAROUSEL class at the Castle is Full, but I wanted to share the sample with you for future reference...  It features a bounty of beautiful mermaids with glistening tails and golden crowns.  On the bottom are waves with frolicking fish, and a coral cave is hiding in behind.  I've added some wonderful faux coral to the roof.  Lots of fun options here, this should be a wonderful class!

Birthing An Alligator - Part 1

Babyalligator

When I think of Alligators I think:
*Big
*Powerful
*Frightening
*Primal (thank you Lea for reminding me of this!)
*And in the case of my 'Alligator Wall' - Fun!

So why work on an Alligator right now?  Well, partly once I assembled my 'Alligator Wall' I felt it needed something down in the lower left hand corner...  But I suddenly realized that there is Much Much more to this project then just creating a filler for my wall!

I have been wanting to get back into TEXTILES for quite a while now.  Textiles is my background, I spent years learning about, playing with and creating with it in the form of wearable art.  I made dolls for many years and loved  'dressing them' the best.  Teaching at the CASTLE pushed my art much more towards PAPER.  I love paper!  But there is something really deep inside of ME that needs to work with fibers and textiles.

So I have started an Alligator...
Not just any alligator, but a BABY Alligator, and I thought you might enjoy hearing about my process as I take this leap back to my roots so to speak.

IMG_1695

I spent some time looking for a nice Alligator silhouette, and decided I liked the one shown on top of this post the best.  After finding the image, I enlarged it 250%, so its more life-size.  In reality my enlarged version measures about 25 inches from nose to tail.  Feeling the need to stay 'sustainable and green' I also decided to only use fabrics and materials that I already have.  I first cut out the basic Alligator shape of a nice raw cotton batting.   Then I lay this on top of a shrunken wool sweater and traced the shape to re-cut.  But this time I cut the shape about a 1/4 of an inch smaller all the way around.  I'm totally in a grove now, not really thinking why - just doing...

My reasoning for using creamy whites here in the beginning has to do with my love of the 'White Alligator' that lives in San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences.  He is a real beauty and a true must see!

IMG_1697

Next I stitched the two layers together with a darker thread, outlining the shape.  I worked fast, and left the loose threads.

IMG_1698
IMG_1699

At this point I truly wasn't quite sure how to proceed.  After letting it sit for a few hours, I decided to go back to one of my favorite techniques when I was in school - Reverse Applique.

"In reverse applique two layers of fabric are used and the top layer is cut away showing the fabric underneath."

IMG_1731
IMG_1732
IMG_1733

As tempted as I might be to let it be finished now, I still feel it needs more.  I found THIS IMAGE while doing some computer browsing yesterday and something about it just struck a chord!  Partly it was the colors used, but also the simplicity of shapes.   I pulled out my box of Fabric Scraps and started digging - looking for colors that spoke to me.

IMG_1737

After finding a few pieces that seem to say Alligator, I began cutting them into tiny squares and circles.  I also went through my button box and dug out a large handful of tiny mother of pearl buttons - harking back to the White Alligator who inspired the initial coloring.

IMG_1740

Now the fun part, how to use these little bits and pieces...  Here is what I have lain out so far.  I don't want the initial Applique cuts to disappear, yet I do want something NEW to happen.

IMG_1742
IMG_1744

I'm feeling inspired by how my embroidery threads happen to be arranged.  Haphazardly but in a definite color range.

IMG_1747

Thats as far as I've come.
I am finding it profound that I chose a 'Baby Alligator' to do this project.  I see this as a Baby Step towards going back to my fiber roots.  I hope you enjoy hearing about my process and following along on this new path...
More Soon!
