Woven Heart And Hand Valentine Tutorial...

IMG_0018

I've had a number of requests for my 'Woven Heart And Hand Valentine' so I've decided to create a mini tutorial on how you can make your own.  My Mother taught me this technique when I was a little girl, and its always been a favorite of mine.

Step1:

With a pencil, trace your hand (from wrist to wrist) onto the back of a decorative paper .  I've used old sheet music.  Refine the lines, by straightening them - making elegant fingers.

IMG_0001

Step2:

Flair out your tracing at wrists on both sides - creating cuffs.

IMG_0002

Step3:

With scissors, cut out hand and cuff.

IMG_0003

Step4:

Using decorative scissors (I used a small scallop) cut a curved end where cuff will be.

IMG_0004

Step5:

Now cut out a heart from a pretty red decorative paper.  I've used a handmade Italian Marbled paper from the Castle.  Make sure your heart fits into the palm of your papercut hand.

IMG_0005

IMG_0007

Step6:

Gently fold hand in half lenghwise, without creating too hard of a crease.

IMG_0008

Step7:

Fold heart in half as well, matching lobes.

IMG_0009

Step8:

Now place folded heart over folded hand, so that the heart lies upside down in the center of your hand palm as shown.  Make sure folds are tight together.

IMG_0010

Step9:

Holding your heart and hand together, cut 5 slits into both layers, making slits equal distant apart and equal distant in length, and slanted up towards heart curves.   Be careful not to cut slits beyond hand papercut.  I like to start with the center slit and then cut slits above and below.

IMG_0011

Step10:

Pull heart from hand and turn so that the hand and heart are facing upwards together.  Place heart on top of hand, and gently slip each cut notch of heart into cut notches of hand.

IMG_0013

Step11:

Now gently push down on each tip (starting from top) so that another heart layer shows through.

Weaving will vary depending on length and width of your cuts.  Try a heart with more than 5 cuts for extra complexity!  Hint:  odd number of cuts will always give a pretty end result.

IMG_0014

IMG_0015

Step12:

Finish off your hand by adding a crepe-paper or doily cuff on the end.

Sign the back and send to your Valentine!

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!

Seasonal Creations...

Deer Mask

I am having so  much fun making textile masks.  This woodland deer and a black Krampus have gone to the Castle on approval.  So many ideas are skipping through my head...  I've also been playing with using Alcohol Inks on crepe paper, making lovely floral colored samples, to use for waxed flowers.  More soon...

Brain Storms and Such...

******Charles Grogg - Subterraneous tumblr

Sometimes absences are due to too much activity...  It's been crazy busy here at Ullabenulla.  I've been creating new samples for Spring classes (YES - Spring 2011!)  where does time go???  (Image above by Charles Grogg)  I will be doing Valentines classes at the Castle, as well as a Mardi Gras 'Mask' class.  I had so much fun creating these 'Firebird' and 'Greenman' samples, I'm itching to make some more - especially with Halloween just around the corner!

I also designed and made a new Lizard pin to go with my Chinoiserie Fish pin...

I am working on re-doing my popular 'Backgrounds Class' in a new format. Using a large Moleskine Japanese Foldout journal we'll spend a day creating beautifully detailed and multi-layered pages for a really artful journal experience!

Background sample details

More class samples in the works - the Castle hopes to have a new schedule available by early to mid November.

Just for fun, I've been playing with the idea of creating a 'Haunted Necklace', inspired by the season.  Its still in progress, especially after Teenage Daughter said:  "Oh Mom, it looks so Marie Antoinette!"  Not quite the reaction I was hoping for, but I'll keep trying.  I used cotton spider webbing as the base, and made 'beads' from Antique silver ribbon.  I also added old torn lace, pearls, hand-stitched baby cap pieces and a wonderful wavy yarn.  Haunted it may not be yet - but at least its keeping me occupied...

Another project got started when I pulled out a wonderful old Joan Vass navy knit skirt that I purchased in 1986 in New York, the year I met my husband!  (We are big-time into recycling here at Ullabenulla!) Discovering some nasty little moth holes I decided to do some creative patching - 'slow stitching' for those in the know...  First a bird, then a flock, and finally an oak branch. Now to find time to do some 'slow beading' as well...

Cobwebs On The Walls...

M.A.COBWEB AMETHIST

I've been in love with the wallpapers of Marthe Armitage for a while now.  Their attention to detail and subtle coloring is supreme!  Marthe handcuts lino blocks for each design and then rolls them herself on huge presses.  True artistry at work here!

The papers are carried by the prestigious Hamilton Weston, a supplier of many historic wallpapers. Images and scans here from the beautiful blog Little Augury.

Paper Flowers...

30705-1_EXQUISITE2

A lovely album preserving ten delicate and meticulously prepared cut paper flowers. The album is inscribed on the front fly leaf "Souvenir à Mlle. Heloise Bigaud / Hector de D. Juin 1848" and was almost certainly specially prepared as a gift of friendship (or courtship). The front cover displays the gilt initials "H. B." in gothic letters framed within a decorative gilt border. The flowers themselves are cut from various multi-colored papers. The minute detail and perfect composition of several of these flower "collages" make these exceptional examples of this popular genre.

Available from Hinck & Wall.

More ABC's of Altered Books At The CASTLE!

IMG_3622

I am falling a little behind in posting - sorry...  This last weekend I had 10 wonderful women join me in learning 26 plus plus plus techniques at the Castle.  This is a fast paced class, where students focus on 3 to 5 techniques per alphabet letter.  Its amazing to see how each student renders the techniques, and no book looks the same in the end!  We use Moleskine Japanese Accordian books to present the letters, so that everyone goes home with a colorful lineup of multiple techniques.  This class is perfect for those who want to learn about altered books in a two day intensive!

Now YOU get to guess which letters are shown here!

49 Candles!

IMG_3492

Every year of my life, on this morning I have been serenaded by song, and this morning was no exception! From near and far, phone calls, emails, letters and hugs have arrived - letting me know how truly Blessed I am!  My Mother told me (again) this morning how happy she was that day 49 years ago, at 2:12 am when I arrived, and I told her how happy I am too, that I am here!  Life is indeed good!

These amazing antique movable Silhouettes are a small part of a stunning gift given to me yesterday by The Queen of Ribboned Crowns who always makes me smile and laugh and helped me celebrate my day - a day early. Doesn't that look like me above, singing with Sadie? And surely tonight the golden candle will be lit when my dear husband opens the door!

PDF Tutorials On ETSY!

IMG_3475

I did it!  The six tutorials that I presented at last weeks Tinsel and Treasures Show have now been made into PDF's and are ready to purchase in My ETSY Shop!  For ease and convenience I have added the Etsy Mini-shop to my sidebar.  Just press on one of the tutorial images and it will take you right there!

These first six are all 'small' projects, as opposed to my larger  'classroom' projects.  Each takes about an hour to complete.  The PDF's have been formatted to fit American standard letter size paper, as well as Universal A4 size paper.  Each tutorial comes with detailed instructions with lots of photos, and beautiful patterns and images.

I can't wait to hear what you all think of them!!!

Polish Bridal Couple in Paper...

422520.501

This truly delightful paper collage is from Poland, and was created in the early 1930's.  It shows a bridal couple and bridesmaid.  Researching the folk costume reveals that it is from Warsaw.  How wonderful that the artist used photos for the faces, along with printed papers for the clothing.  I adore the flowers around the couple as much as the costumes.

Wearable Papel Picado!

3648508194_8797eeca30_b

I absolutely adore it when art techniques cross and create something totally new and unexpected!  Just look at these wonderful dresses by Latin designer Ronaldo Fraga! His models look like a cross between Minnie Mouse and Papel Picado with a little Frida Ethnicity thrown in just for fun!  I would love to do something like this in felt - an apron perhaps?  or a jumper?
