More ABC's of Altered Books At The CASTLE!

IMG_3622

I am falling a little behind in posting - sorry...  This last weekend I had 10 wonderful women join me in learning 26 plus plus plus techniques at the Castle.  This is a fast paced class, where students focus on 3 to 5 techniques per alphabet letter.  Its amazing to see how each student renders the techniques, and no book looks the same in the end!  We use Moleskine Japanese Accordian books to present the letters, so that everyone goes home with a colorful lineup of multiple techniques.  This class is perfect for those who want to learn about altered books in a two day intensive!

Now YOU get to guess which letters are shown here!

I am off to the CASTLE today, to take John McRae's 'French Sedan Chair' Class! So why the image above? It is called 'A Lady Descending from a Sedan Chair' and is a study drawn for the painting 'The Porteous Mob' by James Drummond, in 1855. Isn't she lovely?  Drawing  Link , painted scene here.

Tomorrow I hope to show you my completed chair, till then you must imagine what it will look like...

Mayday Festivities Among Raindrops...

IMG_2035

MAYDAY began with a flurry of raindrops and drizzle here in Northern California. But as you well know, Magic comes easily here at the CASTLE - rain or no rain. When I arrived in the morning KARIMA asked me to create a MAYPOLE for our window maiden to carry.  I immediately envisioned something out of my childhood in Scandinavia, a (paper) flower topped wheel for our young lass to carry in celebration! Here she stands, in all her glory, eager to welcome our guests and wish everyone a JOYOUS MAY!!!

John's Enchanted Optical Illusions...

IMG_2011

Spending a day with John McRae at the CASTLE is always like taking a bath in creative inspiration.  Ideas and images get tossed across the shop, as we chat about new finds, discoveries and directions!  Yesterday was no exception!  John ALWAYS has something new up his sleeves!  Here he is with one of his magical 'Optical Illusion Spring Tableau's', a truly enchanting Victorian style handheld folly, made from a convex mirror, miniature trees and foliage, dresden, and an antique handle.  Look within - at the mirror -  and you are immediately transported into a three dimensional illusion of a springtime tableau!  Magic as only John can do!!!

Paper Pinwheels!

IMG_0195

I'll be working with John McRae at the CASTLE today and on Monday!  If you are in town, come by and say Hello!!!  I've been wanting to share John's Paper Pinwheels for a while now, so today seems appropriate.  This is also a great post on how one artists mind works - namely Johns!

John came to my house a few months ago, and admired my hand-tinted 'French Merchant' prints that I have hanging in my hallway.  One in particular caught his eye immediately.  Called 'Merchande de Moulins a vent' (Windmill Merchant) by Carle Vernet, it shows an older woman with a basket full of wonderful toy pinwheels. See image below.

Let me tell you, I've had this print hanging in my home for over two years and not once did I think to take direct inspiration from it.  John did!!!  A couple of weeks after his visit, not only had he recreated the pinwheels in the print, but he come up with a few of his own designs, and created a class out of them!  Combining juicy papers, Dresden, wooden sticks, and cotton batting dolls John's Whirling Wonders would be perfect for any party!

If you'd like to make your own Paper Pinwheels, John's class will be held on Saturday May 30th, from 11:00 to 5:00.  (Call 510-204-9801 to reserve a spot!)

Wardian Adventures...

IMG_1883

What better way to spend a pouring rain kind of day, then playing with friends and creating treasures?  Yesterday I treated Nancy of Fete et Fleur and myself to a day at the Castle, to create Wardian Cases with John McRae!  I was intrigued with John's inventive use of Mica and Dresden and have totally fallen in love with his techniques! This morning I looked in awe at our creations again, did we really make those?  Above you see our finished pieces all lined up in a row, pretty wonderful don't you think???

Here's John putting his 'golden hands' to good work.

Chocolate Ormolu Box!

Recently John McRae of the CASTLE created this amazing Chocolate Ormolu Box! Look closely, nothing is as it appears... Mouthwatering delicacies are crafted from shiny paper and glass glitter, pick one up and secret compartments appear! The 'glass' is in fact sheets of Mica, and the delicate 'Ormolu', antiqued paper dresden. Truly this is a masterwork by the 'Master of Dresden' himself! BRAVO!!! (size approx. 1 foot square)

Visitors at the Castle!

Dscn9433

I am always delighted and thrilled when my blog readers search me out at the CASTLE. Unfortunately I am not always there... But this last weekend I was lucky enough to have one of my youngest readers (she's 10!) come by with her parents (who also read my blog) to say hello! HI GABRIELLA! Isn't she adorable with her new kitty puppet?

PUNCH AND JUDY at the Castle!

Dscn9152

I delivered my 'Punch and Judy' dolls to the Castle today, and they are very comfortable in their new theatre/home built by John McRae! When John gave me the project a couple of weeks ago, the first thing I did was go through all my boxes of fabrics and trims and pull out things that I thought would work for the dolls. I knew I wanted to work mostly with primary colors, and that I wanted the 'Baby Punch' to be done in baby blues. Amazingly, I ended up having everything I needed on hand, which is always a wonderful feeling, and the only things I purchased were the mannequin's! The heads were sculpted out of 'DAS' paperclay on 12" and 5" mannequins.

For Punch, I found a wonderful rich red wool that become the main part of his 'costume'. He "had" to have a bump on his back and a big belly, which made pattern drafting a little tricky. I was really happy how the embroidered fabric from Guatemala turned out on him, and the combination of vintage laces with other trims. I put one of the red anchors on the back of his hat, a quiet nod to all the 'Seaside' Punch and Judy shows that are so popular in England now.

Dscn9138
Dscn9142
Dscn9145

Judy was less defined initially, so I gathered fabrics that had a 'country marm' feel. As you can see, I didn't use all of them. Her bonnet was created from a piece of an antique French baby bonnet, that is wired for form. Her apron is also a vintage piece. You can't see them here, but she has bright red bloomers on underneath her skirt!

Dscn9136
Dscn9148
Dscn9147

Baby Punch was a surprise, as I had been asked only to do Punch and Judy. But I just couldn't leave him out! Shari, one of the Castle's employee's had recently given me the little 'duckling' handkerchief that belonged to her mother, and it became the focal point of babies costume! His dress was created of a vintage tea towel, and the hat used one of my favorite trims with bunnies on it!

All in all, they are a very happy family, full of mischief and the usual dysfunctions! ENJOY!!!
