be still my (online) heart...

Datamancerlaptopopen

OK, I am an Apple user, but I'll be honest if I had one of these Steampunk Victorian Laptop's I'd happily switch to HP in a heart beat! "This may look like a Victorian music box, but inside this intricately hand-crafted wooden case lives a Hewlett-Packard ZT1000 laptop that runs both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux. It features an elaborate display of clockworks under glass, engraved brass accents, claw feet, an antiqued copper keyboard and mouse, leather wrist pads, and customized wireless network card. The machine turns on with an antique clock-winding key by way of a custom-built ratcheting switch made from old clock parts." To top it all off, the artist has added an 'accessory' quill pen, that double's as a stylus for use on the touch pad! I am swooning in cyberspace!!! (link via Pia Jane Bijkerk)

Anna's Menagerie

I am actually surprised that I haven't done a post on Anna Lambert until now. She is truly one of my favorite ceramic artists! Her handbuilt earthenware showcase her whimsical sensibility and love of nature! Her naturally colored pieces often feature beautiful organic shapes topped with delightful birds, fish or flowers. It would be impossible to chose just one!!! ENJOY!

Opera Coat Project

The Alberta Craft Council in partnership with the Edmonton Opera created The Opera Coat Project in 2006. Pulling together a diverse group of professional designers, visual artists, craftspersons and artisans from across Alberta, this unique group created a one of a kind collection showcasing the world of opera through a series of wearable art coats. This unusual project provided a rare "artist community" of both established and emerging artists challenging its participants to explore new techniques and work in a way sometimes unfamiliar to them. The outcome provided fresh commentary on many of the world's most beloved operas as well as some operas that are less familiar.

Marie And The Golden Bough

Dscn8494

Barbara Willis, cloth doll maker extroidenaire and good friend recently asked me to contribute a special paper doll to be part of a new book she is working on! I was thrilled about the invitation. Her instructions to me, included a lovely victorian image and the words 'Make Her Pretty'! I immediately thought of THIS DRESS that I created for the Bloglandia Ball! If you know Barbara, you know she takes 'Pretty' very seriously, and she has a true LOVE of anything French! I decided on the sophisticated colour palette of pink, brown and tan, and a theme of Marie Antoinette. After digging through piles of papers, baskets of ribbons and a box of lovely fabrics I pieced together her skirt. The under-layer of a beautiful calligraphy (see last piece to far right, and piece just under her hand pointing down, was completely covered by the time I finished! I hadn't planned on adding the music paper panier, but felt like the skirt needed something to 'hold it together, when I reached that point.

Her blouse was created from a lovely bright pink tie-dyed silk that I had ironed onto fabric. I then added hand-painted silk flower petals for her sleeves, with music paper cuffs. For her hair, I decided to 'needle felt' white wool on top of a piece of white felt. I love the realistic look it gave! I then sewed on the ribbons, trim, and pearls and added feathers on top. The 'Golden Bough was an afterthought... she needed something to hold. I fiddled around with some Dresden antlers and came up with a branch like shape that I liked. The idea of Marie holding court with a Golden Bough in hand appeals to my romantic sensibilities!
